Black Necked Crane Festival
The annual Black Necked Crane festival is celebrated int he courtyard of Gangteng Monastery in Phobjikha valley. The festival is an occasion for the locals to rejoice and celebrate the arrival of majestic bird Black necked cranes from Tibetan plateau during the winter months and which are held as a religious blessing by the people of Phobjikha and its also consider as a big events. it is held on 12 November annually.
The festival includes several cultural programs such as folk song and dances and also mask dances performed by the local people and students.
The festival is organized by the Phobjikha Environment management committee , a local group composed of elected local leaders, a strong female component , government representatives, monks, and Royal Society for the Protection of Nature(RSPN) representatives. Festiival has become a part of the local culture in the society ever since it was first initiated by RSPN in 1998.
